OpenClaw with nRouter

Configure an OpenClaw OpenAI-compatible provider through nRouter and verify model, tool, fallback, budget, and retention behavior.

Last updated

OpenClaw exposes OpenAI-compatible endpoints for agent workflows. nRouter can provide the upstream-compatible endpoint when the selected OpenClaw model route and request wire match nRouter's supported API surface. Treat OpenClaw configuration as version-sensitive and verify against the official provider documentation.

Configure a provider profile

Use the OpenClaw configuration mechanism documented for your installed release. The values below show the integration shape; keep credentials in your secret manager and use the exact provider/model keys required by that release.

{
  "models": {
    "providers": {
      "nrouter": {
        "baseUrl": "https://api.nrouter.ai/v1",
        "apiKey": "${NROUTER_API_KEY}"
      }
    }
  }
}

Set NROUTER_API_KEY in the process environment, choose a model from the nRouter catalog, and run one non-destructive agent turn. OpenClaw's OpenAI-compatible gateway documentation lists the endpoint family to validate.

Agent safety checklist

  1. Give each agent or environment its own nRouter virtual key.
  2. Set a hard budget before enabling loops or delegated tool calls.
  3. Test model fallbacks with the same tool schema and response wire.
  4. Inspect request logs, guardrail decisions, and cost metadata after every staging run.

Read the CrewAI guide for similar multi-agent budget isolation patterns, then review guardrails and observability.
