Cursor with nRouter
Connect supported Cursor chat models to nRouter using provider credentials, then validate model coverage, billing, and feature limits before rollout.
Last updated
Cursor supports provider API keys for supported chat models. nRouter can act as the provider-facing gateway when the selected Cursor model and wire are compatible with the endpoint. This is a compatibility tutorial, not a claim that every Cursor feature—such as proprietary completion models—can be replaced by a custom provider.
Check the current Cursor limits first
Read Cursor's official BYOK documentation. Cursor states that custom API keys apply to supported chat models and that other product features may continue to use Cursor-managed models.
Configure a supported provider
- Create an nRouter virtual key and set a small budget.
- In Cursor, open Settings → Models and choose the provider whose API shape matches the nRouter route you are testing.
- Enter the nRouter virtual key where Cursor requests that provider key.
- Select a model visible in nRouter's model catalog, then run a short chat request.
Do not assume that a model shown in one provider's catalog supports every Cursor surface. Validate chat, streaming, tool calls, and any agent workflow separately.
Verify before rollout
- Check the request ID and model served in nRouter observability.
- Confirm the provider and model route in the response metadata.
- Set a per-key budget and test the limit with a non-production key.
- Review Cursor's own security notes and your organization's data policy before sending source code.
Continue with the Node.js SDK examples or budget controls for repeatable tests.
